I’m sure every New Yorker knows this but here’s a little tip for visitors: the Mermaid Inn, which has three locations, does a lovely happy hour and a half every day of the week (5:30 - 7 pm), including oysters, $3 fish tacos, and $6 shrimp and avocado sliders, and every meal ends with a complementary chocolate pudding and fortune-telling fish. (I’m “fickle”? Whatever, you’re a fish.)

The Mermaid Inn’s signature complimentary dessert, a teacup of chocolate pudding with a fortune-telling fish on the side (apparently I’m jealous…?).

Nothing says summer like a shrimp cocktail, the signature warm-weather snack of the Pailey girls. Last night I dined with Julie, the younger sister, at the Mermaid Inn.
Though it’s right around the corner from my apartment, I rarely go. In fact the last I dined there was with Julie, last June or July. We sat in the back patio, just as we did last night, and she regaled me with tales of the online dating life, not knowing she was mere weeks away from meeting her match. And this fall they’ll move in together. What a difference a year makes!
We also had grilled Romaine salads with capers and anchovies and sweet little lobster sliders, a Monday night special — and, of course, a bottle of rose.

Dinner tonight was half a chilled lobster, Old Bay fries, and an Old Bay bloody mary at The Mermaid Inn with a dear ol’ friend. My burps taste like Old Bay.
(Sorry.)
(No I’m not.)
