M.’s traditional homemade macarons: Champagne and Kir Royale, both with rum — in honor of the new bar — and dusted with gold.
He also made a couple rounds of Ramos Gin Fizzes on Christmas morning (twice makes it a tradition!) and this gorgeous crown roast for Christmas dinner.
We have our ups and downs, lord knows, but that gent sure knows the way to my heart. (A new poppy-red bag didn’t hurt, either. :)

Macaron lovers of New York City, next Saturday is your day! Get a free macaron from these fine retailers.
PS: The slogan, “Macaron — the new cupcake,” makes me gag. NOOOOOO! Cupcakes are just so … America circa the Bush years. Macarons are the exquisite marriage of centuries-old craftmanship and unusual ingredients. (Give me a free macaron and I will forgive that ridiculous motto.)

Elizabeth’s husband brought us a big box of Ladurée macarons from Paris (they got wise and started selling them in the Charles de Gaulle duty free shops).
Many were eaten on Saturday night; my goal for today is to not polish off the remaining half-dozen, despite the rather alarming fact that they are mere feet from where I write this.
(After I took the photo, I returned them to their box, put the box inside a bag and the bag inside the breadbox. Can’t be too careful around a girl like me.)
PS: That’s the moss-filled vase by Flores del Sol. I highly recommend the shop!

What I Did Over My Weekend Vacation, Part III

On Saturday night, we headed uptown for a (rather epic) Hanukkah party thrown by the parents of M.’s very best high school friend.

Eileen, the hostess, is an artist who sculpts and casts pieces in marble, bronze, plastic, just about anything you can imagine, makes jaw-dropping jewelry, and has turned her huge apartment into a trove of treasures. On my last two visits — for Passover and Rosh Hashanah — I was a bit shy about taking pictures, but this time, I went for it.

{M. made macarons to give as holiday gifts: champagne (with gold leaf!) and chocolate ganache. Unreal, right?}

{The main latke station. Conservative estimates put the number of latkes made and consumed in the course of the party at 600.}

{M. pitched in at the auxilary latke station.}

{This year’s “latkepet,” a take-home gift made by Eileen, was an elephant. I squealed like a little girl when I saw them arrayed on the bed.}

{I’m particularly taken with this piece.}

{Puts my fluffball to shame.}

{We gave our friends’ kids luchador masks. They dubbed themselves “Good Batman”…}

{And “Bad Batman.”}
