My wonderful, one-and-only dad turns 60 on Sunday and I’m headed home to celebrate. We’re spending the weekend at a farmhouse near the Red Root River in Minnesota and more than 30 friends and family are joining us. I’m looking forward to biking, tubing (with a Nalgene full of champagne, of course), Badminton Cups in the fading sun, BBQ ribs and pies and more BBQ ribs and pies, relief from this month-long heat wave (it’s only 85 there!), big birthday surprises, and some of my favorite people in the whole damn world.
Happy weekend, everyone!

Juicy Fruit (+ vegetables)

Yesterday, M. brought out his juicer for the summer season.  He made a base for ginger beer and cucumber juice for our Badminton Cups* (and he made a vat of tonic, but I don’t think that had anything to do with the juicer).

Cocktails that taste like salad are delightful, but I’m excited to use the juicer for a juice fast — my first.  I’m thinking three days, sometime in early June.  Looking to Nancy for inspiration (she’s doing a more extreme version than I think I can handle: while it’s not all juice, it is all vegetables — no fruit sugars.  Eek.)

* I made them and they were delicious: 3 parts gin (Beefeater, please), 2.5 parts cucumber juice, 1 part edelflower juice/syrup. Shake with ice and garnish with a lime disc.
