Thanks to Tall Girl Tales’ visit to San Francisco’s excellent Blue Bottle Coffee Company, I was craving New Orleans-style iced coffee on Sunday morning — but the local Blue Bottle outpost is all the way in Williamsburg. Didn’t quite jive with our wander-around-the-neighborhood plans.
So instead we did an East 7th Street cold-drip coffee smack-down: the newly opened Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Shop, which serves foodie-fave Intelligentsia coffee, vs. Abraço, the chic and serious little neighborhood favorite.
I gave away the winner right there, didn’t I? You can’t compete with Abraço, at least not on their terms. A Mud mocha or Blue Bottle’s NOLA iced coffee (if that’s what you’re craving) or anything by Aldo could give them a run for their money, but if well-roasted and well-made coffee is what you’re looking for and you’re in the East Village Manhattan, why go anywhere else?
Oh and also they have fantastic food. He had a boreka stuffed with pickled scapes and goat cheese, I had a “lil’ eggie” with fennel pesto on a brioche bun. Smackdown complete.
