“Today I Cried”
Jessica El-Amin, a poet and the daughter of one of my dad’s good friends, sent around an email essay that she wrote yesterday after she cast her vote for Obama, who she calls “a Brother … my Brother.” She wrote:
This is for our children, and I think of my own, the future they will have. The dreams and goals of growing up and remembering this day. I will remember that:
Ishmael loved being Barack Obama for Halloween as my mother’s neighbors put extra pieces of candy into his ballot box.
Idreis singing at the dinner table ” McCain Mcain !!, He’s Our Man…. NOT!!.. as we all laughed
Inayah so excited this morning to go and vote at school, “Im voting for Barack Obama today!
Ibrahim, who every time he sees Obama on television or in print says,.” Mom, that’s MyboBama.
and for Isa who doesn’t have a clue yet will always know this mans gentle, friendly face.
I cried today because my children will have a piece of history that gives them hope, change and a vision of themselves when they see our next president.
