John Le Carré in Hamburg in the 60s.  Via The New Yorker.  I’m listening to him read from his latest novel, in which he coined the word “politopath.”
I love his spy novels. It’s inspiring, the way he walks the line between literature and pulp. (I use “pulp” very respectfully, and “literature” rather less so.)
Some of my favorite books by Le Carré:

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
The Honourable Schoolboy

A Perfect Spy (probably his very best)
The Little Drummer Girl
The Constant Gardener
