The Obama campaign is going to win with field organizing, especially get out the vote work, and GOTV only works when there are people hitting the pavement, manning the phones, and helping to manage all that data.
If you’re serious about helping, I recommend voting in advance with an absentee ballot (many states allow you to do so without requiring proof that you’ll be out of state) and using Nov. 4th to encourage others to vote and get them to the polls.
Went to a meeting yesterday at a friend’s house where a local member of the Obama campaign discussed ways to get involved. They have four specific needs:
- Phone Banking
- Door-to-door Canvasing
- Voter Registration
- Data Entry
All necessary information is provided by the compaign to conduct these activities. It’s a really slick operation. I’m going to help initially with data entry and voter registration. The campaign has an online tool for data entry where the information generated from phone banking and canvassing is entered. This allows the campaign to better target its efforts by identify who is leaning to Obama, who is a lost cause, who wants to volunteer, etc.
They are also very open to input from volunteers, who the campaign realizes knows their communities best. I’m giving thought to taking election day off, renting a passenger van, and driving people to the polls who might have trouble getting there.
If Obama is going to win this election it will be with the ground game: voter registraion and get out the vote. Get involved!
