A synopsis of The Point!, one of my favorite animated movies and quite possibly the trippiest, most subversive thing ever shown on network television.
The creator, Harry Nilsson, described the moment of inspiration for the film:
I was on acid and I looked at the trees and I realized that they all came to points, and the little branches came to points, and the houses came to point. I thought, ‘Oh! Everything has a point, and if it doesn’t, then there’s a point to it.’
I have it on good authority that on Feb. 2, 1971, the night that it aired on ABC, the long-haired twenty-somethings of the nation got stoned en masse and gathered ‘round the tube. The former wasn’t so out of the ordinary, but the latter was. My source didn’t even watch the moon landing.
