Deep-frying platanos at Michael Cirino’s on Sunday. My brain was on a loop: oh my god oh my god oh my god so hot so hot so hot…
I was also taking notes for a story I plan on writing, which were utter gobbledy-gook (I wrote the words “dog = Cow” three times). After getting home, taking a shower as cold as I could stand and cranking the AC to 60 (sorry, earth mama), I made sense of the chicken scratch, wrote out all my impressions and memories, and sketched out the bones of the piece.
That was one of the things my former boss, Molly O’Neill, taught me: no matter how exhausted you are after a day of reporting (and often times, traveling and socializing and eating), spend an hour organizing your notes and thoughts before bed. And start writing a draft as soon after the interview(s) or event(s) as possible. So much easier said.
