Thanks to Andrea for pointing this out: Superior Dairy of Ohio has redesigned the milk jug so they can be stacked on top of shrinkwrapped cardboard bands (to be recycled afterwards), eliminating the need for crates, which in turn eliminates the need to clean the crates. And without crates taking up space, each truck can deliver 50% more milk, greatly reducing energy use.
These are the kinds of human-level responses to global warming / energy prices that will, taken together, add up to a wedge.
They’re exciting to witness and think about, and one of the reasons I want to start combining my dual professional lives — as writer and as non-profiteer working to help NYC meet its PlaNYC 2030 goals — and begin writing about sustainability issues. Sadly, it’s a field with immense growth opportunities.
So, I’m officially putting that out there, universe (to take a page from lovepuppy’s songbook.)
