Last night, we went to an awesome fundraiser concert for Reverend Billy, the Green Party candidate for mayor. The good Reverend is the leader of the Church of Life After Shopping. The Church’s mission is to take back public spaces, resist the steady march of big box stores and mindless consumerism, and celebrate “the 500 neighborhoods” of New York City.
Take your localvore mentality to the next level! Instead of the Duane Reades, shop at the mom-and-pop’s — or, more likely, the 妈妈-and-爸爸’s. They haven’t been the beneficiaries of Mayor Mike’s tax breaks and incentives for corporations. Invest in the community, participate in a “gift economy,” and we’ll all do better. Who knows? Maybe working families will be able to afford to live with dignity in this city again.
As Reverend Billy and his excellent gospel choir sing:

Start spreading the wealth
I’m hoping to stay.
I came to live my life here
New York, New York!
