One night in Lanzhou
It’s been said many times but I’ll say it again: one of the amazing things about living in NYC is that you can travel to the ends of the earth without leaving the five boroughs — scrumptiously speaking, anyway. Last night we walked from the East Village to Lanzhou, a city in northern China, with a layover for cocktails in the Commonwealth of Allen & Delancey. (Ok, so our real...

Two-Year Hiatus for El Bulli in Spain  →
Mr. Adrià said on Tuesday that he would close El Bulli in 2012 and 2013 but that he would continue to use it as a research lab. The restaurant traditionally closes from mid-December to mid-June so he and his staff can develop new dishes and techniques. Considering what they can come up with over six months of experimentation, I’m almost afraid of what two years will bring. (Afraid and...

P.S. Anna...
While I’ve got your ear: the February cover is one of the most stale and uninspired I’ve seen from you in a long time, and that’s saying something. Jennifer Biel in a three-piece denim suit? No one wants to look like that. Where’s the magic? The whimsy? The FASHION? BUT (and this is a big BUT) … because of this, you’re forgiven, forever and ever. So long as...

An 18-Year-Old Looks Back On Life →
The essay that famously captivated Mr. Salinger. From Wikipedia: In 1972, at the age of 53, Salinger had a year-long relationship with 18-year-old Joyce Maynard, already an experienced writer for Seventeen magazine. The New York Times had asked Maynard to write an article for them which, when published as “An Eighteen-Year-Old Looks Back On Life” on April 23, 1972, made her a...

Obama as jovial national daddy →
Jan’s analysis is, as always, spot on. She begins with criticism (spending freeze, “entitlement commission,” phantom Iranian nuclear threat), then moves to praise (financial aid for higher education, withdrawal from two wars, cracking down on lobbyists), and finishes with this: The best of the speech was its informal authority. He talked to these Congresscritters (and the...

Gumbo A-Geaux-Geaux
So what WAS I doing? Only throwing an awesome party, thankyouverymuch. As you know, the star attraction was gumbo (and M. was MVP). We’ve been cooking for days. Here’s the play-by-play: On Friday night, Pinchy went in the pot … soon to be joined by her sister Grabby. Then we made shellfish stock with their shells plus shrimp shells. The traditional assembling of...
