Call to support health care reform
According to Senator Schumer’s office, a call to the Finance Committee or individual senators is better than a letter. And they really need to know that Americans are putting on the pressure not to weaken the bill with too many concessions. Here’s a talking points script: “I am calling as a concerned citizen who supports significant health care reform this year along the lines...

– W magazine, Sept. 2007. You know those six-day-a-week, 45-minute, high-impact dance cardio workouts that I do? They’re from Gwyneth’s trainer, the infamous Miss Tracy. Oh fuck. But I’m not placing all the blame on the workouts — and not just because I love them. There is a...

– A girl at a sidewalk cafe to her friends, as they watched me hobble by in Das Boot. You know, it almost makes it worth it — the pain, the immobility, the I HAVE TO FUCKING WEAR THIS IN AUGUST?! — because at least I’m someone’s silver lining.

Welcome to the Hamlet of Guilty Pleasures....
After five “tasting pours” of wine (read: full glasses) on Saturday, Laura and I were riding the express train to Girl Bonding Town. Of course we stopped in the Hamlet of Guilty Pleasures, where we both admitted we’re kind of addicted to wedding blogs. “It’s not like I want to get married any time soon!” she said, “I just like pretty things!” “Exactly!” I said, “Pretty things and parties and...

No crustaceans were harmed in the making of this...
From an NYT article on food styling for movies: On the set of “Julie & Julia,” the lobsters posed a special challenge. Ms. [Amy] Adams appears to plunge two live lobsters into a pot of steaming water. The steam is actually a cool mist, and just off camera representatives from the American Humane Association monitored the creatures’ health.

NPR Audience Picks: 100 Best Beach Books Ever →
It starts with the Harry Potter series, so I’m not promising much. When we go to the North Fork in August, I’ll be reading 2666 by Roberto Bolaño, Fool’s Gold by Gillian Tett, Cracks by Sheila Kohler, and for the proper beach-read experience, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire by Margot Berwin. (I like a mix of high and low, fiction and nonfiction.)

Manhattan is the thinnest county in New York State — no surprise — and yet, 42% of Manhattanites are still overweight or obese! (NYT) A “slender yet muscular” SoHo painter helpfully clarifies the statistic: “It’s probably more like 20 percent overweight down here,” he said from a bench outside Balthazar. “It might even go down to zero percent during Fashion...
